History of the house

A piece of Davos history

1912–1924
In 1912, the building was erected – originally as the elegant Hotel Conrady. From the outside, it impressed with its Art Nouveau façade, featuring clean lines, decorative details, and generous windows that flooded the rooms with light. At that time, Davos attracted many travelers and summer visitors, who sought rest in the pure mountain air and appreciated the comfort of modern hotels.

1924
Only a few years later, the purpose of the house changed. The hotel was transformed into a private sanatorium. This was due to the unique climatic conditions of Davos: the dry, pure mountain air was considered beneficial to health – especially for people suffering from lung diseases and other respiratory ailments. The house now offered not only relaxation, but also medically supervised stays in a peaceful environment.

1938–1953
During these years, the building became known as “Sanatorium Sursum.” Many patients from various countries came here to find healing and strength. At that time, the house was a place of hope and recovery, nestled in the quiet mountain landscape.

After 1953
After 1953, the Benedictine Sisters took over the management. Under their care, the house was not only expanded, but also enriched with its own chapel. It was given the name “St. Vinzenz” and developed into a sanatorium and guesthouse that offered not only physical healing but also spiritual peace. The monastic spirit shaped both the atmosphere and daily life, giving the house a special, contemplative character.

1996 to today
A new chapter began in 1996, when the Sutter-Umiker family took over the historic building. With great dedication and attention to detail, they returned it to its original purpose: a hotel. Since then, the house has been carefully renovated and modernized step by step, while preserving its historic character. Today, it combines the charm of bygone times with contemporary comfort and warmly welcomes guests from all over the world to experience the beauty of Davos.

Our Management

Hospitality
is our Passion

In June 2010, my husband, Tom Umiker, and I had the privilege of taking over the hotel that had been lovingly run by my parents. Since then, we have continued its story as a true family business, guided by passion, warmth, and the desire to create a genuine home away from home in Davos.

Our foundation lies in our studies at the Hotel Management School in Lucerne, complemented by valuable experiences we gained both in Switzerland and abroad. Every day, we bring these insights and ideas into our work – always with the aim of making your stay with us as pleasant, relaxing, and unforgettable as possible.

At the Hotel Edelweiss, time never stands still: with great care and attention to detail, we continuously renovate and renew the house, preserving its tradition while offering modern comfort. The result is a welcoming atmosphere where you can feel at ease from the very first moment.

We truly look forward to welcoming you soon – and extend to you already our warmest greetings.
